TAIJI

Taichi teacher Armand

These lines from the Tao Te Ching speak of the unified duality of all things. The principal of duality is ideally expressed in Taiji where the play of Yin and Yang shows that opposites define each other and each become the source of the other.

This principal is primarily studied by executing slow movements put together in a sequence. With practice, we realise that opposites co-exist at all time. Movement and stillness, open and closed, roundness and squareness even Yin and Yang are present simultaneously at all time in the form.

When the movements are fluid and the postures comfortable and natural what looks soft is actually strong. Combined with spirit and intent, energy flows efficiently creating effortless power.

The qualities gained by practice bring balance and harmony between the spiritual and the physical. Thus, all benefits of Taiji (calmness, coordination, balance, strength, suppleness, stamina, confidence, reduced stress, improved circulation, etc.) apply concurrently to the three major aspects of Taiji; mind, health and martial art.

The slow form is one of the many ways of addressing all these principals. In the 'Alex Dong International Taijiquan Association' we also practice and teach many more forms and exercises. (See school syllabus)
